Level Names and Features
This page details all kinds of different information regarding levels, such as the IDs used in the filename for the level, level features that are "hardcoded" into that level slot, etc.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Level IDs
- 1 to 8: Normal Levels (9 is a possible value, but it is unused)
- 20: Coin Battle Level
- 21: Ghost House
- 22: Tower
- 23: Tower 2 (Same icon as normal tower; goes unused)
- 24: Castle
- 25: Castle 2 (Same icon as normal castle; goes unused)
- 26 to 29: Toad Houses
- 33 to 35: Enemy Ambushes
- 36: Cannon
- 38: Airship
- 40: Titlescreen
- 41: Peach's Castle
- 42: Ending Credits
Hardcoded Level Features
NOTE: Most of these hardcoded features are still present in Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii.

01-01
has a Peach's Castle background object (bgA_0104
andbgB_0104
) in Area 1 overlapping any other set backgrounds at the start of the level.

Area 2 messes with the players physics, likely to make it harder or easier to travel against the rolling hill. - Level
01-24
Area 1 lets the player go further above the top of the screen than normally allowed. - Level
01-40
requires the entrance to be moved a few tiles to the right (usually 4 tiles), lest the game crashes. - Level
02-05
disables any and all Zoom Controller sprites in multiplayer. - Level
02-24
Area 1 uses the custom castle scrolling feature and changes the model of the lava fromobj_magma.arc
toobj_magmawave.arc
. Additionally, tilesets are not randomized in this Area. - Level
03-04
has a lot of hardcoded checks, like choosing between two different Hint Movies depending on if the Red Switch is on or off. - Level

has hardcoded behavior likely related to the Giant Bubble sprite. - Level
08-02
makes the Lava's glow effect always display above Layer 0. - Level
08-03
uses special liquid effects in all 4 Areas. Water, Raft/Rising and Falling Water, Lava, Quicksand, and Poison Water will have 4-5 block tall waves, and non-lava waves will have glitched textures. No matter what liquid is used, they all have deadly collision, even if Thick/Ghost Fog is added to the level. - Level
08-06
alters the Z-order of Lava to prevent the crests from being visible through the rising lava. - Level
08-07
has some hardcoded behavior related to vertical Zone Bounds and to benefit the Bone Coaster. It may modify the speed at which the camera tracks Mario's movement across the screen, or disable the camera from focusing on dead players in multiplayer. - Level
08-24
will take the player to the credits when beaten. Textures of the Bowser fight glitch if the level is edited to be a different level. Some textures specific to the Bowser boss fight are only loaded in this stage. Also, exclusively in08-24
, Event ID 2 activates when Bowser's battle starts, Event ID 3 activates when he falls down into the pit, and Event ID 4 activates when he returns as Mega Bowser. - Levels

, if you are able to enter them, will load the Toad House for the relevant world. - Levels

(Peach's Castle level slots) will not display the in-level HUD. Additionally, they are the only levels that can spawn Toad's message when a Toad sprite is present. - All Toad House levels will not display the in-level HUD. Placing a Toad sprite into the level will show the related message.
- Any normal levels (slots 1 through 9, towers, ghost houses, castles, and airships) will not display star coins on the in-level HUD if they do not have a level node on the worldmap.
