Loading Files in Riivolution

Riivolution is an excellent tool for loading game mods onto your console. It works by reading an XML file and replacing files accordingly. The program looks for the XMLs in the riivolution folder on the SD Card/USB Drive, so they must be placed here for them to be found. Below are two different XML files, which you can use directly for testing or as a template for your own (more details about this can be found here).

Basic[edit | edit source]

This XML file is intended for beginners. It supports loading custom levels and tilesets, but also any other file in the game if you so choose. Every modded file should be placed in a folder named nsmb on the root of the SD Card/USB Drive, except for levels (which have to be placed in nsmb/Stage) and tilesets (which go in nsmb/Stage/Texture). To use this XML, simply copy the content of the following spoiler to a new file (you can use Notepad for this purpose), then save it in the riivolution folder.

<wiidisc version="1" shiftfiles="true">
    <id game="SMN" />
    <options>
        <section name="Testing">
            <option name="File Replacement">
                <choice name="Enabled">
                    <patch id="nsmbfolder" />
                </choice>
            </option>
        </section>
    </options>
    <patch id="nsmbfolder">
        <folder external="/nsmb" recursive="false" />
        <folder external="/nsmb" disc="/" />
        <folder external="/nsmb/Stage/" disc="/Stage/" create="true" />
        <folder external="/nsmb/Stage/Texture/" disc="/Stage/Texture/" create="true" />
    </patch>
</wiidisc>

Advanced[edit | edit source]

This XML file is intended for advanced users. It contains several options for loading different files from different mods, in order to make testing quicker whilst avoiding clutter. It also includes support for cheat codes and custom savegames. The mods included in the options are Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii, Newer: Summer Sun and Another Super Mario Bros. Wii. To use this, simply unpack the archive's content on the root of the SD Card/USB Drive (overwrite if asked), then place the files you want to test in the proper folders.

An important note is that Riivolution only needs the XML on the SD Card/USB Drive, as the files themselves don't have to be present on the device. In fact, they can be loaded over an Internet connection, which is covered here.
